Choosing Between Window Shutters, Shades And Blinds

If you’re not familiar with the various window coverings and treatments available, you probably aren’t aware of the vast differences between window shutters, window shades and window blinds, much less how to choose between the three. Both window blinds and window shutters, for example, have slats in them to allow light and even air to come through should you choose to have them open. On the other hand, window shades are usually opaque or transluscent in nature and are made of solid fabric or light vinyl which is rolled up on a spool or pulled up by a string. Window blinds are also unique in that they are mounted on the inside of a window whereas window shutters are mounted on the outside of a home’s windows. Window shutters are often used as a means of securing the home from intruders or weather damage, while window blinds and window shades are more suitable to preserving privacy from within the home. These are just a few of the more obvious differences and similarities between the three.

About Window Shutters

Window shutters are attached to a home’s exterior and are hinged onto the window frame to open and close like a set of double doors. Window shutters are made to last for decades and some even come with a lifetime guarantee. They are also more expensive than window blinds and shades. Because they can lend to the safety of a home, window shutters are often viewed as an investment and can even increase a home’s value.

More About Window Blinds

Window blinds are made by connecting uniform pieces of wood or vinyl together with string. When they’re extended and opened, the blinds create slats for light to come through the window. To raise and lower the blinds, there is usually a string to pull. A rod is also usually attached to window blinds for opening and closing the slats. Since blinds are usually translucent, they can certainly reduce light but that can’t block it out entirely.

Window Shades

Window shades fall into the following four categories: Roman shades, roller window shades, pleated shades and cellular shades.

Roller shades roll up and down when pulled and are usually made of fabric or vinyl. Roman shades are normally made out of fabric since the idea is for them to gather up and fold when raised. Cellular shades are also made out of fabric and are made in a honeycomb shape that looks pleated from the front. That shape helps them to regulate heating and cooling around the window. Shades made from fabric that’s horizontally pleated are, not surprisingly, pleated shades.

Choosing Between The Three

Now that you know the similarities, differences and uses for window blinds, window shades and window shutters, you should have no problem choosing between them.
